The objective of this research is to study effects of hidden curriculum towards desirable characteristics of community nursing students. Sample are 36 nursing students from faculty of nursing, College of Asian Scholars in academic year 2015. Samples are divided into an experimental group in the amount 18 from community funded nursing students of Nampong Hospital, Ubolratana Hospital, Sumsung Hospital and KhonKaen Hospital and a control group in the amount of 18 non-community funded nursing students. Simple random sampling method is used to select samples in control group. Research’s tools consisted of hidden curriculum and learning instruction guideline, assessment form of desirable characteristics of community nursing students and personal learning record. The analysis of data used percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test and content analysis.
Results of study
Desirable characteristics of community nursing students in the experimental group and the control group classified in all dimensions including public mind, patience, communication and community working skills, caring and leadership, are in good level of both groups (x ̅ = 4.44 , S.D.= 0.46 และ x ̅ = 3.82, S.D.= 0.65)
Desirable characteristics of community nursing students of the experimental group and the control group of self assessment classified in 4 dimensions including public mind, patience, caring and leadership, are in good level of both groups. For the dimensions of communication and community working skills are excellence in the experimental group and in good level in the control group.
Desirable characteristics of community nursing students of the experimental group and the control group of peer assessment in all dimensions the experimental group is in excellence level and the control group is in good level.
Desirable characteristics of community nursing students of the experimental group and the control group of instructor assessment classified in 2 dimensions including patience ,communication and community working skills are good level of both groups. For the dimensions of public mind, caring and leadership the experimental group is in good level and the control group is moderate level.
Significance (P> 0.000) difference is demonstrated, the experimental group had higher mean score on desirable characteristics of community nursing students than the control group.
Lesson to learned in the hidden curriculum of the experimental group as followings : 1) communication and interpersonal relationship 2) leadership 3) public mind 4) diligent and patience 5) compassion and mercy 6) responsibility 7) critical thinking 8) sufficiency happiness 9) inspiration for going back to work in their hometown.
